Reverend Marilyn Cecelia King departed this earthly home on Thursday March 29, 2018. Born to the union of the late Elton E. and Eunice G. King on November 8, 1954, Marilyn was a native and life-long resident of Mobile, Alabama. She received her elementary education at St. Joseph’s school and was a 1971 graduate of Bishop Toolen High School. Her education continued at Tuskegee Institute where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology followed by a Masters in Public Administration from the University of South Alabama. She was employed by the Mobile Water Works and Prichard Water Works for over 25 years.
Her service to Christ began at St. Paul AME Church where she was an active member of the Young Peoples Department of Missionary Society, Youth choir which she later directed, and Youth Usher Board. Upon her return from college she continued her service as a Missionary until her ordination. She pastored Roberts Chapel AME Church in McIntosh, Alabama and was serving as Pastor of Mount Olive AME Church, Creola, Alabama at the time of her death. Additionally, she served on the Board of Examiners Ninth Episcopal District of the AME Church.
She was a member of Blacks in Government and a dedicated member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated where she was Past President and Treasurer of Delta Theta Zeta Chapter and served as Past State Marshal and a state officer. She was also a 2008 graduate of Leadership Mobile. Marilyn was preceded in death by her brother Marvin E. King and leaves to cherish her memories three brothers; Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Michael J. King, Seoul, Republic of Korea, Assistant Fire Chief Myron E. King, Mobile, Alabama, and Sergeant First Class (Retired) Terrance Coleman of Savannah, Georgia; two uncles Willie (Novella) Griffin Sr, Moss Point, Mississippi and James McInnis, Pascagoula, Mississippi; six nieces, Shawnita, Danielle, and Mia King of Mobile, Deyana Simpson of Columbus, GA, Keisha Frechette of Marietta, GA and Mechelle King of Milwaukee, WI; two nephews, Marquand Lewis, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Gary Allen, Mobile, Alabama; devoted cousins, Janice Debose and Mary Houze, four Godchildren, Dannette Barker, Chassity Holley, Leondria Evans Rambo, and Fabian Smith; devoted friends Gwendolyn Reed, Dorothy Evans, Vivian Donald Carraway, Rita Hawthorne, Luther and Fannie Cunningham, her sisters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 7, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. until the 10:00 a.m. funeral hour at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Rev. Robert Rumbley Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens, Theodore, AL. Services entrusted to Hodge's Chapel, L.L.C. 701 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Mobile, Alabama 36603.
